The bulletproof vest program means new protection for Plattsburgh police

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (WCAX) – New bulletproof vests are protecting police officers in Plattsburgh thanks to the help of a federal grant.

The Patrick Leahy Bulletproof Vest Partnership Program offsets a portion of the cost for departments that purchase vests.

The Plattsburgh Police Department purchased seven new pieces of body armor this year. The vests cost $1,000 each and the grant covers 50% of the cost

The department applies for the grants every year. They only apply to new hires.

“That’s good because it’s a cost savings we can achieve. When we save money, we essentially save taxpayer dollars and it provides quality protection,” said Plattsburgh Police Lt. Joshua Pond.

He says the additions bring the patrol force to 31 officers.
