Tonight, vice presidential candidates Ohio Sen. JD Vance and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz will face off in their first debate, hosted by CBS. This will be the only time the two candidates meet on stage before Election Day.

This debate comes after the second presidential debate and the first face-off between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.

Trump announced Vance as his running mate on the first day of the Republican National Convention.

Harris chose Walz just weeks after she chose Walz to succeed President Biden as the Democratic presidential nominee.

Here’s what you should know:

The debate will take place in New York City, NY. Norah O’Donnell, anchor and managing editor of CBS Evening News, and Margaret Brennan, anchor of “Face the Nation” and chief foreign affairs correspondent for CBS News, will moderate the debate.

Ahead of the debate, which runs from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (MT), people can watch live coverage on CBS News 24 hours a day starting at 2:00 p.m. (MT).

It will also air live on CBS, CBS News Streaming Network and Paramount+ and stream live on CBSNews.com without a cable login.

NPR will live blog coverage of the debate and provide on-air analysis afterward.

Here are the rules:

  • The debate will last 90 minutes
  • Both candidates agreed on a set of rules
  • There will be no audience
  • Each candidate will stand behind a podium
  • No pre-written notes
  • Topics and questions will not be announced in advance
  • Unlike the presidential debates, the microphones will remain on, but CBS News reserves the right to turn them off
  • Each candidate has two minutes to answer each question, then each candidate has one minute for further counterarguments
  • The candidates have two minutes to make their final speech
  • Vance won a virtual coin toss and came in second with his final statement

This will likely be the last debate before Election Day on November 5th.

Harris challenged Trump to another debate on October 23, but the former president declined.
