Iran threatens further attacks on Israel if the IDF retaliates

Iran warned Israel and the United States on Tuesday evening against any response to its massive missile attack on the Jewish state.

“Should the Zionist regime dare to react or commit further malicious acts, there will be a devastating response,” the Iranian mission to the United Nations wrote in a post on X.

She also made a veiled threat to the United States, emphasizing that “regional states and supporters of the Zionists are advised to separate from the regime.”

Iranian-backed Iraqi armed groups were more direct, warning that U.S. bases in Iraq and the region would become targets if the United States joined a response to Iranian attacks on Israel or if Israel used Iraqi airspace against Tehran.

The decision to attack Israel was made by Iran’s supreme leader

A senior Iranian official told Reuters that the order to fire missiles at Israel was given by the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Khamenei remains in a safe location, the senior official added.

A senior Iranian official said the United States and Russia were alerted before the missiles were launched.

The attack followed Israel’s intensive bombing of Iranian proxy group military targets in Lebanon in recent weeks, in which Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was assassinated.

On Monday night, its ground troops entered southern Lebanon for the first time since the Second Lebanon War in 2006 to drive Hezbollah from its border area.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said the rocket attack was in retaliation for the killing of Nasrallah and the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran over the summer. Israel is widely believed to be responsible for Haniyeh’s death but has not mitigated responsibility for the attack.
