Illinois State Police Troop 9 has released additional information regarding a fatal three-vehicle crash that occurred Friday afternoon on U.S. Route 50, a quarter-mile west of the Xenia/Iola intersection in Clay County. The incident occurred around 12:07 p.m. when 44-year-old William K. Shufeldt of Iuka was driving a 2024 Tesla X eastbound. At the same time, 59-year-old Mia S. Daniels of Monticello, AR, was traveling west in a 1998 Toyota Camry.

As Shufeldt attempted to pass two vehicles and a semi-truck in front of him, he collided almost head-on with Daniels’ Camry. After this impact, Shufeldt’s Tesla was hit by the semi-truck. Mia S. Daniels was pronounced dead at the scene by Clay County Coroner Bryce Henry. William Shufeldt was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries, while the tractor-trailer driver was uninjured. Shufeldt was cited for improper passing on the left.
