Man has to stand trial after denying assault charges

A 27-year-old man accused of assault and animal cruelty has appeared in court.

Alex Thomas, of no fixed abode, has been charged with one count of assault in connection with an incident in Weston-super-Mare on May 27.

A second charge, reportedly filed the same day, relates to causing unnecessary suffering to a dog that died after falling from a height, police said.

Mr Thomas pleaded not guilty to one count of assault by beating at North Somerset Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. He is due to attend a trial at North Somerset Crown Court from March 7, 2025.
