A man in his 30s has been sent to stand trial at the Central Criminal Court over the alleged sexual assault of a woman in Co Donegal.

The incident is said to have occurred on August 15, 2021.

The defendant, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the alleged victim, appeared in Letterkenny District Court today.

He is accused of sexually assaulting a woman in a named town in County Donegal that day.

The charge contravenes section of the Criminal Law (Rape Amendment) Act 1990, as amended by section 37 of the Sexual Offenders Register’s Act 2001.

Detective Garda David Anthony Leahy gave information leading to the defendant’s arrest.

He said the man gave no answer when he was charged in connection with the alleged incident.

The defendant’s lawyer, Mr Kieran O’Gorman, said bail had been agreed and conditions had been put in place.

Garda Sergeant Jim Collins said the Director of Public Prosecutions had agreed that the defendant would be referred to the Central Criminal Court for trial.

Legal aid was granted and the proceedings were adjourned until January 20th.
