17-year-old dead after crash in Bedford County, VSP says

Virginia State Police (VSP) said a 17-year-old died after a crash in Bedford County on Friday.

VSP said they are investigating a single-vehicle accident that resulted in a fatality.

According to VSP, the accident occurred at 10:10 p.m. Friday on Bellevue Road, a tenth of a mile north of Route 221 in Bedford County.

A 2017 Volkswagen Jetta was traveling north on Bellevue Road when the vehicle lost control, left the left side of the road and struck a fence and a tree, VSP said.

VSP said the driver was identified as William Edward Bettenhausen, 17, of Forest. Bettenhausen was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. He was injured and taken to Lynchburg General Hospital, where he died on September 29, 2024.

The crash remains under investigation, VSP said.
