Three people were killed and 15 others injured in a knife attack at a Walmart in China.

The footage shows the knifeman, a 37-year-old man surnamed Lin, launching the chilling attack as he entered the Walmart supermarket in Shanghai.

People can be seen running away from Lin, who was wearing a blue shirt and calmly strolling through the workshop with a knife in his hand.

Lin has since been arrested, Songjiang district police said in a statement on Tuesday.

According to the initial investigation, Lin traveled to Shanghai to “vent his anger” after a personal financial dispute, the police statement said.

Eighteen people were taken to hospital for treatment, but three later died.

The attack occurred in a suburb southwest of Shanghai and occurred on the eve of the week-long National Day holiday.

The knife attack came a day before China’s Golden Week national holiday, when holiday travel was expected to surge.

Public stabbings have become increasingly common in China over the years, with authorities often blaming mental illness. Children in schools are a common target.

In September, a 10-year-old Japanese student was fatally stabbed by an attacker just meters from his school in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen.

That incident, as well as a knife attack on two Japanese citizens in June in Suzhou, a major city in eastern China, have raised security concerns among members of the Japanese community in China.

Stabbings are rare in Shanghai, but not unprecedented.

Earlier this year, a Chinese man stabbed four U.S. university lecturers and a Chinese man who tried to intervene in a public park in the northeastern city of Jilin.

The four lecturers from Cornell College taught at Beihua University. Her injuries were not critical.

In 2022, a man carried out a stabbing attack at a major hospital in China’s financial center, injuring 15 people.

The man who authorities said was “angry with society” after an investment failed was sentenced to death a year later.
