Here is some of the latest news from this morning, Tuesday, October 1st:

The police are investigating a knife attack in the city center

Pittsburgh police responded to the city’s Highland Park neighborhood early Monday morning after receiving a report of a man with a stab wound.

Police said that shortly after 7:30 a.m., a Pittsburgh Regional Transit driver told dispatch that a passenger was requesting a police and EMS response at Bunkerhill and St. Clair streets to report a serious assault.

Emergency responders spoke to a man in his 20s who had a stab wound to his heel. Police said he was largely uncooperative with officers. He reportedly told officers that the stabbing occurred somewhere downtown, but did not specify the time or exact location.

He was transported to the hospital in stable condition. The investigation is ongoing.

The CitiParks Office of Special Events announced it will begin accepting entries for the City of Pittsburgh’s 22nd Annual Gingerbread House Contest starting Tuesday. Registration begins online at 10 a.m. at pittsburghpa.gov/gingerbread and remains open until November 10 at 11:59 p.m. Individuals, schools, communities, non-profit organizations and professionals are eligible to participate in the exhibitions.

The city’s Office of Special Events partners with Clearview Federal Credit Union to present Pittsburgh’s official holiday events, including the Gingerbread House Display and the 109th Tree Lighting Ceremony.

This year’s exhibition at the City County Building will open with a ceremony on November 22nd. Entries will be on display from Light Up Night (November 23) through early January. In addition to 19 categories, participants are eligible for overall awards such as the “Clearview Choice,” voted on by Clearview representatives, and the “Curator’s Choice,” selected by the Carnegie Museum of Art.

The contest began in 2002 with hotels in downtown Pittsburgh to benefit the Children’s Hospital Free Care Fund and has since attracted thousands of entries and visitors at PPG Place before moving to the City-County Building in 2019.
