When do surveys and results take place?

After an eventful start to the campaign, Donald Trump will face Kamala Harris in the 2024 race for the White House.

Joe Biden withdrew from the race after intense pressure following his disastrous first debate with Trump.

When is the US election?

The US elections will take place on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

The winner will serve in the White House for four years from his inauguration on January 20, 2025.

Voters will elect not only a president, but also congressional candidates for seats in the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.

The road to the White House actually leads through some critical battleground states that will play an outsized role on Election Day.

States are typically split, switching between Democrats and Republicans by narrow margins.

Pennsylvania and its 19 electoral votes proved to be a critical state in the last presidential election, and 2024 will be no different.

To win the presidency, Mr. Trump will also need to flip Arizona, Georgia, Wisconsin and Nevada, which Mr. Biden narrowly won in 2020.

Florida and Ohio, once considered marginal, were safe Republican territory in recent elections. However, nothing is set in stone.

Alabama was the first state to send out its absentee ballots on September 11th.

Here is a schedule for early in-person and absentee voting:

  • September 11th – Alabama
  • September 19 – Wisconsin
  • September 20 – Minnesota, South Dakota and Virginia
  • September 21 – Voting in North Carolina, military and abroad
  • September 23 – Mississippi
  • September 26 – Michigan
  • September 30 – Nebraska
  • October 7th – Georgia
  • October 9th – Arizona
  • October 15 – Georgia
  • October 16 – Nevada
  • October 17 – North Carolina
  • October 19 – Nevada
  • October 21 – Texas
  • October 22 – Wisconsin
  • October 26 – Michigan

The majority of voters go to the polls and the ballot papers are counted. Many people may have already cast their vote in advance via absentee ballot or early voting.

When does the election end?

Votes are counted in each state after each polling station closes. Polling station closing times vary from state to state, but generally begin around 7:00 p.m. local time.

The different time zones in the US mean that ballots have been tabulated on the East Coast, while voters in states like Alaska and Hawaii are still on their way to the polls.

The winner of the election is expected to be announced in a few days. Even then, the results will only be properly finalized after months. However, states and the overall election results are typically “called” long before the final votes are counted.
