Former Sherlock Star Freeman leads A confession as Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher. The series revolves around how he broke police policy to catch the man convicted of O’Callaghan’s death.

Fulcher eventually resigned from his position after it was revealed that he had questioned suspect Christopher Halliwell without a lawyer present and had failed to warn him.

The series deals with the ethical consequences of breaking the rules, as Christopher Halliwell was eventually put behind bars for life for O’Callaghan’s death and the earlier murder of another woman, Becky Godden.

“He did what he did that most people wouldn’t even recognize as a violation of the law,” Freeman told us. “He didn’t kick or hit anyone. He didn’t frame anyone. He didn’t put words in anyone’s mouth.”

“My sympathy and empathy certainly goes out to Steve Fulcher, let’s put it that way, and not just because I played against him. I don’t know how anyone can say they did the wrong thing morally.”

“I am also someone who believes passionately that the police must be held accountable. Of course they do. But morally speaking, I would still much rather have police officers like him out there.”

The TV dramatization was written by Jeff Pope (See No Evil: The Moors Murders)and also has former EastEnders Lead actor Joe Absolom as Christopher Halliwell. Imelda Staunton and Peter Wight also appear in the show.

A confession is now available to stream on Netflix.
