Netflix adds lavish Jenna Coleman costume drama

Netflix has added Jenna Coleman’s lavish period drama Victoriawhich cemented her place as a top star.

For three seasons, Jenna played the young monarch alongside Tom Hughes as the love of Victoria’s life, Prince Albert.

At that time, Jenna was already known for her role as Jasmine Thomas Emmerdale and for the role of Clara Oswald in Doctor WhoHowever, Victoria proved she could lead a major series.

I was actually lucky enough to interview Jenna on location for the first season of VictoriaOf course, where you should start if you haven’t seen the series yet!

The inaugural season, now available on Netflix UK, is in many ways the most interesting, as it covers the early phase of Victoria’s life, something rarely explored elsewhere.

We see 18-year-old Victoria trying to escape her suffocating mother and assert herself as she ascends to the throne.

Jenna told me: “Victoria grew up in Kensington Palace and was treated like a political pawn.

“She has no one in Kensington except her dog. Her relationship with her mother has already broken down at the beginning of the series, despite Conroy [a controlling man who tries to manipulate her] wants to be a father figure to Victoria, she can’t stand him.

But in the opening series we see Victoria gain an ally in her Prime Minister, the dashing Lord Melbourne (Rufus Sewell).

“Her diary entries show that she is obsessed with Melbourne. We explore their incredible relationship, which I don’t think I’ve seen on any other show.”

“Some say it’s love, others think it’s just a friendship, but one thing is clear: if she becomes queen, she needs him, and she really needs him.”

Speaking about why she enjoyed the role, Jenna added: “It’s wonderful to play her because while sometimes she has to act formal, other times she’s just a young girl who wants to break out of her corset to Playing on the floor with her dog.”

Later in the opening series we see Victoria meet Albert and their romantic relationship begins. Victoria had a fantastic cast including Eve Myles, Peter Bowles and Peter Firth, but it was Jenna’s show. Since then, she has starred in a number of dramas, including those on Prime Video wilderness and most recently the hit BBC drama The jetty.

Victoria is available on Netflix UK and ITVX. While American viewers can watch it via PBS Masterpiece. wilderness is currently available on Prime Video The jetty is on BBC iPlayer and BritBox.
