Tamarac city officials said a 6-year-old child died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the city Monday afternoon.

In an email to the city manager’s office, Tamarac spokeswoman Joanna Johnson said the Broward Sheriff’s Office and the Tamarac Fire Department responded to the scene of the “tragic” shooting in the 5600 block of Rock Island Road.

According to BSO, officers responded to reports of a shooting in the area just before 3:30 p.m. and discovered the child had been shot.

The child was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a BSO news release.

The news release did not specify whether the child suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Investigators from the BSO Crime Scene and Homicide Unit were on scene to investigate the shooting.

In a post on X-Monday, U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick identified the dead child as male and said she was “heartbroken for the family experiencing the loss of their baby boy.”

“Too many lives have been lost due to a lack of gun safety in our communities,” wrote the congresswoman representing Tamarac. “Another life cut short too soon. My condolences go out to those affected.”

Further information about the shooting was not immediately released.
