Man convicted of stabbing US postal worker, officials say

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Officials said a man has been convicted by a federal jury of stabbing a U.S. postal worker.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the jury unanimously found 31-year-old Lionel Haile guilty after a four-day trial.

Officials said there is evidence that the attack on the postal worker occurred on December 31, 2021, while the postal worker was delivering mail to an apartment complex in Zachary.

The worker was stabbed in her right leg but fought off Haile as he tried to stab her several more times, officials said. They added that the worker escaped by jumping into a vehicle as it drove out of the apartment complex.

Haile fled the scene but was arrested several days later on Jan. 6, 2022, officials said.

Haile faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office, the Zachary Police Department and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service investigated the case.
