21-year-old from Netherlands died in a UTV accident in Otter Tail County on Sunday

Urbank, MN – At approximately 9:17 a.m. Sunday morning (September 29), the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call about a UTV accident resulting in a rollover in Leaf Mountain Township, southwest of Urbank.

During the accident, the 21-year-old passenger, identified as Jim Jan from the Netherlands, was thrown to the side and the vehicle came to rest on top of him. Attempts were made to remove the UTV before first responders arrived, but these attempts were unsuccessful. Jan was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 43-year-old UTV driver, whom officers identified as Jan Nijland of Brandon, suffered life-threatening injuries and his condition is unknown at this time. The investigation is being conducted by the sheriff’s office.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Parkers Prairie Ambulance, Millerville Rescue, Alomere Ambulance, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota DNR.
