Predicting the 12-team 2024 College Football Playoff rankings after Week 5

Predicting the 12-team 2024 College Football Playoff rankings after Week 5

Another week is upon us and we are one step closer to the ever-exciting 12-team College Football Playoff, the first of its kind to take place in 2024.

Before the field was expanded to 12, fans had a pretty good idea of which four teams had the best chance of making the playoffs. Now it seems like anyone in the AP Top 25 mid-year has a chance.

All four Power Four Conference champions earn a spot and a spot in the top four, while the final eight spots are filled by the All-Stars and the top-ranked Group of Five team.

Even though we’re still weeks away from the first College Football Playoff rankings of the new 12-team era, it’s always fun to sit down and see what it might look like at the start of the year. What might the College Football Playoff field look like before Week 6?

Here are my predictions:

I would love nothing more than to keep the Big 12 out of the top 4 because I feel like no team really deserves to be there. Utah was my top Big 12 team last week, but then lost to Arizona at home this past weekend. Michigan should probably be eliminated too, but I’d be hard-pressed to pick a team to replace them (maybe Clemson?).

Boise State has been one of the biggest surprises this year and could have Heisman front-runner Ashton Jeanty, who is already nearing the 1,000-yard mark after just four games – the Ducks saw him dominate first hand.

Oregon is right at No. 8, moving up one spot from last week after beating UCLA.
