Lee’s Summit man is accused of shooting victims before kidnapping wife and child

LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. (KCTV) – A Lee’s Summit man is facing multiple charges after investigators say he shot a man and kidnapped a woman and child.

Kody Michael Holmes is charged with first-degree assault, three counts of armed criminal action and two counts of kidnapping.

A woman contacted police Saturday claiming Holmes shot a 43-year-old man in an apartment near NE Town Center Boulevard and NE Independence Avenue. She also told investigators that he kidnapped her and a child.

According to a probable cause statement, Holmes arrived at the apartment around 3 a.m. Saturday morning.

The woman said Holmes and the man began arguing, which escalated into a physical fight. The woman said Holmes pulled out a gun and shot the victim, hitting him in the leg.

The man locked himself in the bathroom. The woman told police that Holmes fired a shot through the bathroom door, according to the probable cause statement. Holmes threatened to kill the child in the house before shooting the man again.

Holmes is accused of holding the woman and child at gunpoint for hours. According to court documents, Holmes fired one shot at the woman’s head and another shot at the child’s head.

Holmes forced the woman and child out of the apartment and into his black Dodge Challenger. He drove her around for hours. Court documents show Holmes stopped the car and released the woman.

The probable cause statement states that the woman was able to call police and tell them that Holmes was driving toward Warrensburg.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol eventually spotted Holmes driving a car along 50 Highway. According to officers, Holmes refused to stop. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded and deployed a device that stopped the car.

Officers found the abducted child unharmed in the car, according to a probable cause statement.

The man injured in the shooting is hospitalized with gunshot wounds to his leg and neck. One of the bullets shattered a vertebra in the man’s neck. The bullet then flew downwards and lodged in his torso. The injury left him paralyzed from the neck down, according to court documents.

Holmes is being held on a $500,000 cash bond.
