Hornets’ rushing attack and defense lead to loss to Martin County – Salyersville Independent

INEZ – Magoffin County performed well in several areas in a loss at Martin County on Friday, Sept. 20.

Martin County defeated the Hornets 28-22 in a non-district game.

The loss dropped Magoffin County to 1-4.

Martin County improved to 4-1 after the win.

Martin County earned its fourth straight win, rushing 30 times for 243 yards and four touchdowns. Quarterback Devan Maynard led Martin County on the ground, rushing for 20 carries for 177 yards and four touchdowns in the Cardinals’ win. Maynard was limited through the air, completing three of nine passes for 44 yards. The Martin County quarterback threw two interceptions.

Crayson Lafferty (17 tackles), Zachary Hamilton (15 tackles), Mason McCoy (13 tackles) and Weston Jude (11 tackles) combined to keep Martin County paced defensively. Maynard caused a turnover for Martin County and recorded an interception.

Magoffin County ran 48 times for 231 yards and two touchdowns. Braxton Montgomery paced Magoffin County on the ground, rushing 18 times for 121 yards.
Blake Wireman followed Montgomery’s Magoffin County rushing attack, rushing 15 times for 90 yards and a touchdown.

When quarterback Dason Burchett was on the ground for Magoffin County, he added another rushing touchdown.

Through the air, Burchett completed four of 10 passes for 49 yards. Magoffin County’s quarterback threw an interception.

Wireman caught two of Burchett’s four completions. Jackson Gilliland and Brayden Standifer contributed offensively for Magoffin County, each recording a reception.

Kicker Kevin Garcia paced Magoffin County on special teams. Garcia scored on each of his extra point kick attempts.

As a defensive player for Magoffin County, Standifer posted a team-high 10 tackles.
Following Standifer on defense for Magoffin County, Curtis Jenkins recorded nine tackles and Caleb Perkins recorded seven tackles.

Burchett and Jenkins, who are in Magoffin County’s secondary, each recorded an interception for the Hornets.

Magoffin County will visit Belfry on Friday, Sept. 27, for its Class 3A, District 8 opener.
