NHRC takes action against tragic electrocution of tribal students in Parliament

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has served notice to the Madhya Pradesh government over the electrocution death of two tribal students. The incident took place when the students were cleaning a water tank in a government-run hostel in Dhar district on the instructions of the hostel warden.

The NHRC, citing media reports, criticized the hostel management for their “insensitive manner” and demanded accountability for the dangerous task given to the students which led to their tragic deaths. The students reportedly came into contact with a live wire connected to a water pump in the tank, resulting in an electric shock.

The human rights body has asked the chief secretary and director general of police of Madhya Pradesh to submit a detailed report within two weeks outlining the status of the police investigation and possible compensation to the victims’ families. The NHRC stressed that the incident raised serious human rights concerns.
