Log Cabin Quilt Show begins Thursday | News, sports, jobs

ELKINS – Since 2014, the Log Cabin Quilters’ Guild has filled the Elkins Randolph YMCA gymnasium with artistic creations during the week of the Mountain State Forest Festival.

The organization’s Log Cabin Quilt Show, which will be held over three consecutive days during MSFF (October 3-5), has enjoyed great popularity over the years, attracting over 3,000 visitors in 2023 alone. The Quilt Show is open Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“We will be displaying many beautiful quilts made by guild members.” said Deb Curtis, quilt show organizer. “We will also be displaying children’s blankets made at the Kids Camp sponsored by the Elkins Sewing Center each summer. We will also be hosting a quilt market and there will be some quilts for sale along with other handmade items. There may also be some quilts on display that may be for sale. The story card will indicate if it is for sale, but it must remain hanging until the end of the quilt show.”

The event will feature nearly 100 quilts made by members of the Log Cabin Quilters’ Guild. There will also be a quilt raffle, with most of the proceeds going to fund quilts for dialysis patients in Elkins.

“The Raffle Quilt is a king or queen size quilt and its colors are blue, gold and white.” Curtis said. “We wanted to capture the Mountaineer colors with the quilt and a portion of the money raised will go to a good cause.”

Conway

This year’s guest exhibitor will be Cindy Conway, who has exhibited her quilts and taught various quilting and design techniques in North Carolina and locally at the Lewis County Quilt Retreat at Jackson’s Mill in Jane Lew, the West Virginia Quilt Festival in Summersville and at the Elkins Sewing Center.

Conway was born in Elkins and, after moving to Florida at a young age, moved back to Elkins in 1973 with her husband David, with whom she recently celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary. She retired from Dominion Transmission in 2014 and began experimenting with new ideas and techniques, which led to her founding it “Hidden Bargello” Quilts. She has recently been experimenting with fabric yo-yos and silk flowers, using them as design elements for small welcome blankets and to decorate clothing.

Larrayne Corley is a lifelong resident of Elkins and will be the featured guild member at the Quilt Show this year. Corley’s sewing journey began at a young age when she was part of 4-H and Girl Scouts. She credits her high school home economics class with guiding her on her chosen career path. After graduating from Concord College with a degree in home economics education, Corley’s first job was selling Singer sewing machines for Cupp’s Furniture.

Corley taught at Coalton School and Randolph County Technical Center before retiring from the Randolph County Board of Education in 2013. She took her first quilting class in 2001 and joined the Log Cabin Quilters’ Guild in 2014.

Corley has taught quilting classes and attended many workshops. Her favorite fabrics are bright, colorful designs and tie-dye. She is active with the West Virginia Quilters and helps with their annual Quilt Festival. Several of her quilts have won awards at the West Virginia Quilt Festival.

The Capitol Christmas tree skirt, made last year by Elkins Sewing Center employees, will be on display again at this year’s Quilt Show.

The rock features 18 scenes from around the Monongahela National Forest, including places like Dolly Sods, Bickle Knob, Douglas Falls and the Forest Service building. The scenes were photographed and transferred to a special sewing machine, which sewed the photos onto a dark green velvet fabric.

A special pottery blanket will also be on display. The quilt is a collaboration between two different artists using two different media, potter Bob Mays and quilter Diana Beverage, both former Randolph County residents.

“Bob used to live in Elkins and designed a quilt with one of our members that featured his pottery patterns.” Curtis said. “We’re going to display this quilt and then we’re going to display some of Bob’s pottery. This will be an exhibition.”

Admission to the Elkins Randolph YMCA is free for the Quit Show.

Some of Cindy Conway’s best work will be on display at the Log Cabin Quilters’ Guild Quilt Show being held this week at the Elkins Randolph YMCA.

Cindy Conway’s above-mentioned works have been featured at festivals in West Virginia and North Carolina.
