A claim is circulating on social media that top American tennis player Serena Williams died in a car accident in Texas.

The claim is accompanied by a picture of an accident scene with the following text: “FAREWELL TO A TENNIS LEGEND: Serena Williams has reportedly died after a tragic car accident in Texas.” According to the post circulating, reports suggest that the 23-time Grand Slam champion died in a serious car accident today. While details are still unclear, it is claimed that rescue workers were unable to save her.

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral claim and found it to be false.

Our investigation began with a keyword search on Google that returned no credible news reports or official statements confirming Serena Williams’ involvement in a car accident or her death. Given Serena Williams’ worldwide fame, any news of her death would undoubtedly have made international headlines

While checking Serena Williams’ official social media accounts, we found that she remains active, especially on Instagram. Although the claim that she died has been circulating since September 24, 2024, her most recent post is dated September 28, 2024. Furthermore, there were no announcements or statements regarding any accident or her death on her official website.

Additionally, we conducted a reverse image search of the wrecked cars included in the claim and found that the same image was seen in an October 20, 2023 report from 11Alive The vehicle overturned, causing traffic delays near northbound Georgia 400 on the Mt. Vernon Highway. This confirms that the image has nothing to do with Serena Williams or any current event.

In conclusion, the claim that Serena Williams died in a car accident is completely false. There are no credible reports to support this and Serena Williams has been active on social media and made her last post after the date of the alleged incident. Additionally, the image of the car wreck used to spread the rumor is from an unrelated accident in 2023.
