The Washington Huskies’ Week 6 opponent looks vulnerable to Minnesota’s passing attack

The Michigan Wolverines may be 4-1 this season, but they certainly appear to be a flawed team this season. Before the Washington Huskies’ Week 6 game against the Michigan Wolverines, the Minnesota Golden Gophers happened to point out some weaknesses that Michigan might have.

The Wolverines were able to build a sizable 21-3 halftime lead, but Sherrone Moore’s offense faltered in the second half and the Gophers managed to outscore Michigan 21-6 in the final two quarters of the game. Minnesota took advantage of several opportunities late and nearly pulled off an incredible comeback surprise in Ann Arbor.

It’s possible that this has more to do with Michigan having a bit of a hangover after beating the USC Trojans the week before, but with the Wolverines winning by just three points over an unimpressive Minnesota team, is, well, unimpressive for the defending champions.

The Wolverines are an incredibly one-dimensional team and that was evident on Saturday when Minnesota used a degraded offense to force Michigan to beat them. The Wolverines continually turned to Kalel Mullings to move the ball down the field, and the talented running back had 24 carries for 111 yards (4.6 yards per carry) and a couple of touchdowns.

This isn’t a bad play for the running back, but it’s not impressive either.

Still, he’s a lot better than Alex Orji, the Michigan quarterback who completed 10 of 18 pass attempts for 86 yards, one touchdown and one interception. On the ground, Orji rushed for 12 yards on nine carries.

The offense just didn’t look good, but to be completely honest, that’s been the case for Michigan all season. The Wolverines gained just 241 yards of offense in the win.

The Wolverines should really be thankful for how good their defense is, because that side of the ball made it a real challenge for Minnesota, who also had less than 300 yards of offense on the day. Golden Gophers QB Max Brosmer completed 27 of his 40 attempts for 258 yards and a touchdown against one interception, but that wasn’t enough for the win.

Now it is theoretically possible for Washington to reproduce such a game plan. Will Rogers has proven to be a solid quarterback and the Huskies have a strong defense. We’ll see if they can pull off a surprise on Saturday.
