Two of baseball’s best young shortstops will take center stage when the Orioles and Royals face off in the American League Wild Card Series starting Tuesday.

Baltimore (91-71) couldn’t quite repeat its regular-season success from 2023, when it won 101 games. But these Orioles hope to advance further in October than last year’s group, which failed to win a postseason game.

That largely depends on Baltimore’s potent offense, a unit led by shortstop Gunnar Henderson. Henderson, a first-time All-Star, set a career high with 37 home runs, 92 RBI and an OPS of .897.

The Royals (86-76) are back in the playoffs for the first time since winning the World Series in 2015 and a year after winning just 56 games.

Shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. is Kansas City’s greatest offensive threat and has emerged as one of baseball’s preeminent forces. Like Henderson, Witt set new career highs with 32 home runs, 109 RBI, an AVG of .332 and an OPS of .980.
