Senators captain Brady Tkachuk left the game in the first minute of the third period, injuring his shoulder after being thrown to the ice. He returned to the ice a minute later, but left again and went to the locker room. A few minutes later he reappeared on the bench and finished the game.

Oh, there was the game itself. A couple of familiar faces, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, led the Penguins to a 5-2 victory. Malkin scored two goals and an assist while Sid The Kid scored two goals.

While the game between the Senators and the Pittsburgh Penguins was played in Sudbury, Elliott Lake, winner of the Kraft Hockeyville competition, was the host. Centennial Arena in Elliott Lake is currently undergoing repairs.

The Senators had a good opening period, outscoring the Penguins 15-9.

Seconds after the breakthrough and a wrist shot stopped by Tristan Jarry, Nick Cousins capitalized on a Penguins loss of possession and fired a shot into the net four minutes into the game.

Crosby tied the game at 8:54; A backhand pass from Kris Letang deflected off Crosby’s stick past Ottawa goaltender Anton Forsberg.

With just over nine minutes left in the opening stages, a save from Forsberg ensured the score remained 1-1.

Tim Stutzle made it 2-1 at 12:55 when he fired a shot past Jarry on the short side.

With the Senators on the power play midway through the second period, the Penguins had a good chance while shorthanded, then Ottawa’s Ridly Greig hit the post while staring at an open net.

After what looked like a phantom penalty for obstructing Greig – seriously, it was a bad call – the Penguins scored a strange goal. A Malkin shot hit Jake Sanderson’s stick and flew into the net.

Pittsburgh took a 3-2 lead with 2:58 left in the second period. It was a weak goal as Malkin fired a soft shot from the right side of Forsberg that eluded the goalkeeper.

While Travis Hamonic, who had a strong game, served a penalty for getting into Stutzle’s defense, Crosby scored a goal on the power play, shooting the puck from the side of the net into the goal. Zack MacEwen turned and went to Sam Poulin, who was the one who beat up Stutzle and threw the Penguin to the ice. MacEwen received a double penalty and a misdemeanor.

With 2:16 left, Malkin scored into an empty net.

With just over seven minutes left, Rickard Rakell fired a shot onto the crossbar.

The Senators will complete their preseason with games on October 1st in Montreal, October 4th in Detroit and October 5th at home against Montreal. They open their regular season on October 10th at home against Florida.

SAYS THE GM

When asked about defenseman Carter Yakemchuk, the Senators’ first-round draft pick in June, general manager Steve Staios told Ron MacLean in a second-half interview: “You can see the talent level; There is also so much room to grow. We want to be patient and make sure we do everything right with him.”
