LEBANESE DEATHS

Nasrallah’s body was recovered unharmed from the site of Friday’s attack, a medical source and a security source told Reuters. Hezbollah has not said when his funeral will take place.

Nasrallah turned Hezbollah into a powerful homegrown force in Lebanon and helped make it the linchpin of Iran’s network of allied groups in the Arab world.

On Sunday, some Lebanese mourned his death.

“We have lost the leader who gave us all the strength and faith that we, this small country that we love, can turn it into a paradise,” said Lebanese Christian Sophia Blanche Rouillard, carrying a black flag work in Beirut.

Lebanon’s health ministry said more than 1,000 Lebanese had been killed and 6,000 injured in the past two weeks, without saying how many of them were civilians. According to the government, one million people – a fifth of the population – have fled their homes.

In Beirut, some displaced families spent the night on the benches at Zaitunay Bay, a string of restaurants and cafes on Beirut’s waterfront. By Sunday morning, families with nothing more than a duffel bag full of clothes had rolled out mats to sleep on and made themselves tea.

“You will not be able to destroy us, no matter what you do, no matter how much you bomb, no matter how much you displace people, we will stay here. We won’t go. This is our country and we are staying,” said Francoise Azori, a Beirut resident, jogging through the area.

The United Nations World Food Program launched an emergency operation to provide food to people affected by the conflict.

Saudi Arabia and France said they would send medical aid.

ISRAELI MILITARY ACTION

The Israeli military said it hit dozens of targets in Lebanon, including launchers and weapons caches, and intercepted eight projectiles from the direction of Lebanon and one from the Red Sea.

It also said dozens of Israeli planes had attacked power plants and the ports of Ras Issa and Hodeidah in Yemen, accusing the Houthis of operating under Iranian leadership and in collaboration with Iraqi militias.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said: “Our message is clear: no place is too far for us.”

Nasrallah’s death capped a traumatic two weeks for Hezbollah, which began with the detonation of thousands of its members’ communications devices. It was widely believed that Israel had carried out this action.

Hezbollah’s arsenal has long been a point of contention in Lebanon, a country with a history of civil wars. Lebanese critics of Hezbollah claim the group has unilaterally drawn the country into conflict and weakened the state.

However, Lebanon’s top Christian cleric, Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros Al Rai, said Nasrallah’s killing had “opened a wound in the hearts of the Lebanese.” Rai had previously criticized the militia.
