The Summit’s EP told me how they chose the mountain for the show, and it’s much more complicated than viewers can imagine

CBS brings The summit into living rooms as part of the fall 2024 television schedule, and it has taken a lot of work to get to this point. Not only did they work to dazzle the contestants over the revelation that they would climb a mountain for a chance at $1,000,000, but they also needed the perfect mountain to ensure the show was even possible was. CinemaBlend asked one of the show’s executive producers what went into this process, and it’s more work than I ever imagined.

EP Kevin Lee is a veteran of The challenge, Fight for survival and many other unscripted series beyond that The summit, and was kind enough to share some details about the choice of the New Zealand Alps as the venue for the competition. Location scouting is always important on television, but when you’re trying to film a reality show with a group of people who aren’t necessarily trained in climbing, it’s important to get it right. As Lee explained:

First, [the mountain] has to look right. It has to look dramatic and imposing. It has to be snowy all year round, even in summer, but it also doesn’t have to be so difficult that it doesn’t require technical skills that they don’t have time to learn. . . . Again, it has to be at a high altitude so the snow stays on it, but it can’t be so high that these people who aren’t trained need oxygen to make it.
