Officer-involved shooting in rural Donnybrook

RENVILLE COUNTY, N.D. (KMOT) – A Renville County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a 22-year-old man late Thursday night while responding to an emergency in rural Donnybrook.

According to a report from Sheriff Roger Hutchinson, officers from Ward and Renville counties responded to an emergency complaint in an area north of Donnybrook around 11:20 p.m.

Hutchinson said officers located the man who appeared to be holding a silver revolver and the man-made threatening gestures behind it.

The sheriff said when the man pointed the gun at a Renville County deputy, he fired two shots from his patrol rifle, one of which struck the man in the upper body.

Officers from both counties, as well as North Dakota Highway Patrol officers, performed life-saving measures on the man before Kenmare Ambulance took him to the hospital in Minot.

Hutchinson told Your News Leader the man’s condition is stable. He said no charges have been filed at this time.

The sheriff said the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation is handling the case and the deputy who fired his patrol rifle remains on administrative leave until the investigation is completed.
