The police are ready to change camera providers

A commitment to spend more than $230,000 per year over the next five years on new cameras worn by police officers and installed in Police Department patrol cars and interview rooms will be considered by the Eden Prairie City Council on Tuesday, Oct. 1 .

The proposed contract represents a switch from Motorola technology to cameras manufactured by Arizona-based Axon Enterprise, Inc., formerly known as TASER International.

According to a memo from Police Chief Matt Sackett, existing cameras have reached the end of their lifespan, and department research and testing over the last year concluded that Axon is making better, more reliable cameras.

Eden Prairie police officers have been using body cameras since 2021.

The new contract is on the City Council’s approval calendar, a group of items approved with a single vote.

Tuesday’s regular meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the council chambers of the Eden Prairie City Center, 8080 Mitchell Road.
