Weeks before the US presidential election, election lawsuits are increasing

Multiple media outlets reported that the growing number of state legal challenges to election rules is raising concerns among legal experts that the results of the Nov. 5 presidential election will be disputed.

More than 90 lawsuits challenging election rules and other practices have been filed by Republican-aligned groups this year, The New York Times reported, citing data from the Democratic-aligned Democracy Docket group, which tracks election cases. Meanwhile, the Republican National Committee said it was involved in 120 legal challenges in 26 states alone, Reuters noted. Democrats have also faced their own legal challenges in Georgia and elsewhere.

Legal experts said that while many of the troubling lawsuits are unlikely to have a major impact on the election itself, they point to a broader effort to lay the groundwork for challenges to the results of the Nov. 5 vote, they said.
