Every year on September 23, the world celebrates International Sign Language Day along with International Week of the Deaf. The day is dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of sign languages ​​and promoting the rights of the deaf community worldwide. There was more jubilation for the gathering at Ravindra Bhavan as Goa’s Niyati Malgaonkar was felicitated by Social Welfare Minister Subhash Phal Dessai for winning the Mrs Deaf India title in Hyderabad earlier this month. Dedicating the award to the deaf community in Goa and “everyone who supported me”, Malgaonkar said the feeling of winning was “indescribable”. “The feeling of ‘Yes, I have achieved something’… I won the award not for myself but for Goa,” she said. Specifically for deaf women, she added: “Don’t sit idle at home. Aim high and pursue your dreams. Take small steps and you’ll soon get started.”
Phal Dessai said the mantra for success is: “Believe in yourself.” Never give up. Put your heart and soul into everything you do and victory will be yours.”
