Tragic wall collapse at Perambur railway station claims lives | Chennai News

Chennai: A 42-year-old man died after a portion of the compound’s wall was destroyed Perambur railway station collapsed on Saturday while urinating on it. He was taken to a hospital where he died from his injuries.
The deceased, identified as Balamurugan from Kodungaiyur, worked as an office assistant in a private non-banking financial institution. On Saturday evening, Balamurugan was walking along Perambur High Road near the railway station when he went to relieve himself.
A large section of the wall, 10 to 15 feet long, suddenly collapsed on him. When passers-by heard his screams, they rushed to his aid and pulled him out of the rubble. He was taken to Government Stanley Medical College and Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Police said the wall already has cracks that widened after recent rains.
Balamurugan’s body was sent for post-mortem. Sembium police have registered a case. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Some Perambur residents and commuters said they have filed several petitions on the dilapidated condition of the railway compound wall. “Debris will be dumped along the wall, which will inevitably lead to weakening of the structure. This has been highlighted several times in our petitions but to no avail,” said Raghukumar Choodamani, convener of the Perambur Neighborhood Development Forum.
