London police are investigating an attack with a weapon near the main gates of Western University over Homecoming weekend that sent two people to the hospital.

Officers were called to Richmond and Huron streets near campus for a welfare check around 9:45 p.m. Saturday, police said in a news release issued Sunday.

Police found two people with injuries that they said were not life-threatening. The two were taken to the hospital by paramedics, police said.

The neighborhood near campus where the alleged attack took place drew large crowds of homebound people Saturday afternoon and into the evening.

The police said the investigation was still ongoing until Sunday.

The weapon involved in the attack was not disclosed by police.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call London police at (519) 661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

London police, assisted by Hamilton, Peterborough and Windsor police, as well as city hall staff and London firefighters, patrolled areas near Huron and Richmond streets on Saturday to keep unsanctioned student parties under control.

Large crowds of Western homecoming parties flocked to house parties beginning Saturday morning and throughout the day on Broughdale Avenue, a cul-de-sac between Richmond and Huron streets and Western’s main gates that is notorious for frat parties, as well as surrounding streets.

At some point Saturday evening, police warned that lanes along Richmond Street would be slowed as they advised pedestrians to “stay off the roadway.”

London Police are expected to release details of the enforcement action in the coming days, including the number of tickets issued by officers.
