Taiwan detects China’s test-fire of missiles

TAIPEI, Taiwan – Taiwan’s defense ministry said on Sunday it had detected several waves of missile launches within China, just days after Beijing said it had successfully fired an intercontinental ballistic missile into the Pacific Ocean.

The ministry said in a statement that the missile launches were carried out by the Chinese Missile Force and military in Inner Mongolia, as well as Gansu and Qinghai provinces and the Xinjiang region in western China.

Taiwan said it would continuously monitor developments and that its air defense would maintain a high level of vigilance and alert.

China views the self-governing island of Taiwan as a renegade province that must be brought under its control by force if necessary. Taiwan closely monitors China’s military activities and China has increased exercises around the island in recent years amid rising geopolitical tensions.

Sunday’s firing exercises came after China said on Wednesday it had conducted a test fire of an intercontinental ballistic missile that hit a specific area of the Pacific Ocean.

Taiwan condemned the launch and reiterated that it was against “actions that disrupt peace and stability.”
