Good Samaritans helped rescue a man trapped in a car following a fiery crash that left him with serious injuries in the National City area Sunday morning.

Witnesses said a man driving a white Camaro was weaving through traffic and speeding around 7:40 a.m. before apparently losing control of the car and crashing into a palm tree on the right shoulder of the 5 northbound , just south of Mile of Cars Way.

According to Onscene.Media, the burning engine was thrown from the car into palm trees, which then also caught fire.

Witnesses tried to help the man trapped in the car, but were unable to free him from the rubble. When emergency services arrived, it took them twenty minutes to remove the man from the Camaro.

He suffered serious injuries but was conscious and was taken to a hospital.

It is unclear whether driving under the influence of alcohol was a factor in the accident.
