A burning troll lights the sky above Mount Horeb

The titular troll of the second annual Burning Troll Festival at Mount Horeb burst into flames around 9 p.m. Saturday.

The titular troll at Mount Horeb’s second annual Burning Troll Festival went up in smoke around 9 p.m. Saturday night, to the delight of more than 100 people. As the flames reached their peak, it was difficult to tell which of the spectators were dancing and which were simply trying to avoid being burned by falling ash.

It took about an hour for the inferno to consume the troll, and with it a significant portion of the crowd that gathered in the dining tents or the band disappeared as the flames died down.

The festival-goers were divided into two camps: shouts of “Burn this troll!” and “Long live the troll!” were heard. As the flames rose, the creature’s face became less recognizable, becoming just a pile of sticks.

Playing with fire

Artists spin burning sticks at the second annual Burning Troll Festival at Mount Horeb. Ash rained down on the crowd, and the wooden creature’s mouth spewed out glowing embers like thousands of fireflies with a lowered breath as its face drooped.
