Two injured after multiple shots fired during ISU homecoming

NORMAL – One person has died and another remains in critical condition following a shooting at a “pop-up party” early Sunday morning near Illinois State University.

According to a press release from the Normal Police Department, officers were already dispersing a large group in the 300 block of North Main Street around 3:42 a.m. when they heard multiple gunshots coming from the area.

Officers immediately responded to the 300 block of North University Street where they found two people struck by gunfire, NPD said.

Officers began providing first aid to the victims until the fire department arrived on scene.

Both people were taken to local hospitals, where one of the victims was pronounced dead, the NPD said. The other victim remains in critical condition.

Officers secured the area and were able to find evidence of a shooting, the NPD added.

The Illinois State University Police Department said in a social media post that nearly 1,000 people attended a “pop-up party,” an unsanctioned, non-university event that started in a park and ended a gas station in the area.

The post did not elaborate on what led to the shooting.

The NPD is actively investigating the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 309-454-9535 or use the Tip411 system to tip anonymously.

Sunday’s shooting occurred after shots were fired again early Saturday morning in the 600 block of West Raab Road in Normal.

In that incident, NPD said they responded to a report of multiple gunshots at approximately 2:44 a.m.

Officers secured the area, collected several shell casings and spoke with witnesses.

A business was hit by gunfire, but there were no reports of injuries, the NPD said.
