Teacher arrested for sexually assaulting underage girl

Police on Sunday arrested a teacher of a private school in Coimbatore district on charges of sexually assaulting a minor girl.

The arrested person has been identified as S. Sowndarya (32), a resident of Udayampalayam in Coimbatore.

Police said Sovndarya was working as a teacher at a private school near Annur in the district for the last six months.

The Annur police received a complaint on Saturday from a woman who accused the teacher of sexually abusing her 13-year-old daughter.

Police investigated her complaint and found that the accused had asked the girl to come to a deserted place in the early hours of Saturday and sexually abused her. The girl came out of the house while her parents were sleeping, police said.

The complaint was forwarded to the All Women Police Station in Mettupalayam where a case was lodged against the teacher for violating sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act. She was arrested on Sunday and sent to custody.
