Is it time for the New York Giants-Bill Belichick Watch?

The New York Giants are off to a 1-3 start to the 2024 season and that has fueled debate about whether or not head coach Brian Daboll is in the hot seat.

Several pollsters see Daboll as one of the favorites to lose his job this year, and if they’re right, the Giants will be looking for their sixth head coach after parting ways with Tom Coughlin after the 2015 season.

Who this coach could be remains unclear. Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio believes legendary coach Bill Belichick is a serious candidate to land with the Giants, Philadelphia Eagles or Dallas Cowboys.

Belichick has always had a soft spot for the Giants. When details emerged a few years ago about the Jimmy Garoppolo handling breakdown, a report surfaced that Belichick would want to coach the Giants when things ended in New England.

Depending on how the rest of the year goes, the Giants could make another change; John Mara has fired four coaches in less than a decade.

The possibility of Belichick ending up with the Cowboys or Eagles could be enough to get Mara to pull the trigger and make the man who once left as NYJ’s HC the NYG’s new HC/GM.

Yes, the Giants could go there for a few reasons. First, to keep Belichick away from his division rivals, and second, to bring an established authority figure into the building to finally bring some stability within the organization.

However, this is unlikely to happen. The Giants appear to be headed for another top-10 draft pick next April, and this time they’re getting a quarterback that Daboll and Joe Schoen will be comfortable with.

There are very few coaches better suited than Daboll when it comes to developing quarterbacks. So if that’s the plan, he gets to stay and this Belichick talk goes away.
