Alison Steadman reveals the scene that convinced her to play Gavin and Stacey

Alison Steadman has revealed the scene that convinced her to join the hit sitcom Gavin and Staceyin which she played Gavin’s neurotic mother Pamela.

The 78-year-old actor reflected on how he received the script for the hit sitcom in 2006 and immediately heard Pam’s Essex accent as she read the lines.

Steadman revealed that it was Pam’s very first scene, lounging on the sofa with cucumber slices over her eyes while recovering from a tearful wildlife show, that made her fall in love with the character.

“I could hear the voice and it just clicked for me,” Steadman saidThe Sunday Times. “She’s lying on the couch with cucumbers on her eyes. Gavin comes in and says, “Are you okay, Mom?” and she says, “Actually, I’m not.” I cried all afternoon, I was watching this show, this mother badger was crying because her babies had died. ‘ “Mom, badgers don’t cry. ‘Gavin, I know what I saw.'”

Steadman said that scene made her think, “I have to do this.”

The Life is sweet The actor then played Pam, affectionately known as “Three Steaks Pam” by avid viewers, alongside her husband Mick (Larry Lamb) on screen until the series ended in 2010.

In her new memoir she writes about Gavin and Stacey: Out of characterSteadman wrote: “Pam, also known as Pammalarr, was a gift to me.”

“It wasn’t until I did a chemistry test with Larry Lamb that I knew who was going to play her husband, Mick. The scene we had to do together is one of my favorite scenes from the first episode, let’s just call it the Three Steaks Pam scene.”

In the scene, Pam has three steaks on her plate as part of her Atkins diet plan and explains to a confused Mick and Gavin that one is the actual steak and the other two are a substitute for chips and peas.

“Larry and I laughed so much, we were easygoing and we all knew this was a relationship that would work on and off screen. We had worked together years before and had become friends.”
