The suspected shooter — a 14-year-old student at the north Georgia school — has been arrested and is facing murder charges. Authorities said he will be tried as an adult. Be Charges are also being brought against the father.

A CBS News analysis of data from the K-12 shooting database shows that of the more than 200 incidents through Sept. 4 — including gang violence, domestic incidents and accidents and other causes — 10 occurred in Georgia, including at Apalachee High School shooting.

And like the majority – nearly 51% – of school shootings over the past decade, the deadly incident in north Georgia occurred during the school day while classes were in session. The 2022 shooting in Uvalde, Texas, that killed 19 children and two teachers Robb Elementary Schoolfor example, occurred during school hours.

The rest take place outside of school hours, mostly during extracurricular activities such as sports or school events, such as a shooting at a high school football game in New Jersey in 2023 where a 10 year old was killed. School shootings that occur inside school buildings tend to be more deadly, data shows.

As of September 3, 2024, 18 of the 46 people killed in school shootings were under the age of 18 (this number does not include the two students and two teachers killed in the Georgia shooting).

Since the 1960s, mass shootings in which four or more people are killed or injured have accounted for only a small portion of the number of school gun deaths and injuries in the United States: 75% (75.69%) of deaths and 68% (68.55). The wounded are incidents that are not considered mass shootings and do not attract as much attention.

After the Columbine High School shooting in Colorado in 1999 – at the time the deadliest shooting in the country – many states began requiring active shooter drills, which were conducted in 95% of public schools during the 2015-2016 school year. CBS News previously reported.
