Mary Chilima: expressed her desire for clarity

Mary Chilima, the wife of Malawi’s late Vice President Saulos Chilima, is seeking answers about her husband’s tragic death in a plane crash on June 10, 2024.

The incident, which occurred in Chikangawa Forest, claimed the lives of Saulos Chilima and eight others and sent shockwaves across the country.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, Mary expressed her desire for clarity about the circumstances surrounding her husband’s death, which coincided with their wedding anniversary on September 29th.

She called on the parties concerned to call for a commission of inquiry into the events between June 10th and 11th.

The plane crash caused great sadness and UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his deep sadness and condolences to the government and people of Malawi.

The Bishops’ Conference of Malawi also mourned and described the loss as a “terrible tragedy”.

Mary’s call for a commission of inquiry has drawn mixed reactions from the public. Some find them understandable given the devastating loss they and the nation have suffered.

Commenting on the development, Sylvester Namiwa, Executive Director of the Center for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI), said Mary’s call was timely and in line with what her organization had been calling for.

“There are so many questions that need to be answered. We also have questions about the location and time of the plane crash,” he said.

“If the president does not conduct the investigation within the 14-day deadline we set by October 1, we will take our concerns to the streets.”

However, there was no immediate government response to Mary’s post.

In June, Information and Digitalization Minister Moses Kunkuyu said the government was committed to conducting a full and independent investigation into the plane crash.

This promise aimed to provide closure and transparency to the families of the victims and the nation.

As Mary Chilima searches for answers, the nation awaits the government’s response to the call for a commission of inquiry.
