Sunbathing Californian woman sexually assaulted on the beach, homeless man arrested

A woman sunbathing in Santa Monica, California, was sexually assaulted by a homeless man in broad daylight this week, drawing the city’s attention, according to police.

Alonzo Dickson, a 25-year-old homeless man, approached the 20-year-old woman on the Santa Monica Pier Tuesday morning, climbed on top of her and held her, police said.

Dickson then allegedly began “wearing down” the woman before the woman’s friends were made aware and they intervened. Police arrested Dickson on a charge of sexual assault with restraint.

According to Fox 11, the attack occurred near Ocean Front Walk, a popular biking and running path near the beach.

“He basically turned on her,” Lt. Erika Aklufi of the Santa Monica Police Department. “Her friends realized what was going on [so] She jumped up and he backed away. I would say within 15 minutes that person was in custody.”

Tuesday’s alleged attack is just the latest incident of homeless men attacking women in the area, which is plagued by open-air drug use and mentally ill vagrants on the streets.

“It’s terrible for the community,” Santa Monica Mayor Phil Brock said. “I can’t stop thinking about that girl and how she must feel.”

“We’re safe,” Brock told local station Fox 11. “You or I could take a walk down the boardwalk at 11 o’clock at night and feel like we’re in good shape.”

Law enforcement told Fox 11 that a similar charge was filed against Dickson following his arrest in Washington state.
