49ers WR Deebo Samuel is expected to play Week 4

49ers WR Deebo Samuel is expected to play Week 4

After making a surprise return to training this week, Deebo Samuel looks set to return to the matchday starting lineup this Sunday.

Reports surfaced Saturday night that the San Francisco 49ers’ star wide receiver is expected to return in Week 4 against the New England Patriots. Samuel made a surprise return to the 49ers’ practice field on Thursday, less than two weeks after suffering a calf strain. A pregame practice session will be the final decision on his game status on Sunday.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported the news on Saturday evening, as ESPN’s Adam Schefter subsequently confirmed.

Deebo Samuel, 28, has been out of action since suffering a calf strain in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings. Appearing late in the competition, Samuel was placed on the injury report the next day and missed Week 3 due to the illness. An injury that was supposed to sideline him for a few games has seen the playmaker recover quicker than the team expected.

“The best athletes seem to heal a little quicker,” 49ers general manager John Lynch said Friday on KNBR. “The reason he’s on the field is because he hit all the marks.”

The South Carolina native was able to practice on a limited basis on both Thursday and Friday. Because of this, he was listed as questionable for Week 4. However, the player appears determined to return, telling Bay Area media on Friday that he expects to play.
