The Yankees survive another late-inning scare to move within one game of the World Series with an 8-6 Game 4 victory over the Guardians

his first postseason appearance for the Yankees. Similar to Williams, Gil also allowed a
Run in the first inning when a walk by Steven Kwan and a double by Kyle Manzard scored Jose Ramirez
Drive Kwan home with a sacrifice fly. However, the Yankees didn’t wait long to extend their lead
back to two when Austin Wells, who had struggled most of the postseason, hit a huge home run over the right field fence, his first of the postseason.

In the third inning, the Yankees allowed another run on a single by Josh Naylor, in which he stuck his bat all the way into the opposing batter’s box, sending the ball into left field and shrinking the Yankees’ lead to 3-2.

The one-run advantage held for much of the game, with both starters retired at one point
the third and fourth innings. Williams finished the game with 2.1 innings, four strikeouts and three runs on three hits. Gil pitched four innings, struck out three, walked three
and allowed two runs on three hits. That meant that in their postseason debut, neither starter would be involved in the decision.

The next hit didn’t come until the start of the sixth, when Giancarlo Stanton came up big again for the Yankees. With Cade Smith on the mound, he allowed Soto to reach him

However, he failed and his flip to Rizzo went through his legs, allowing the Guardians to tie the game at six.

After his uncharacteristic struggles in Game 3, the Guardians returned to Clase for the ninth time. But similar to Thursday, the Yankees had their number as Rizzo immediately made up for his mistake with a single to the right hand. A single from Volpe followed. With Jon Berti pinch-run for Rizzo and runners on second and third with one out each, Verdugo fired a ball to shortstop Brayan Rocchio, who boated the ball, allowing Berti to get the go-ahead run .

One batter later, Torres hit a single to extend the Yankees’ lead to 8-6. In the bottom of the ninth, Tommy Kahnle entered the game. Despite allowing two runners entry, he retired Bo Naylor and Rocchio to seal the win for the Yankees.
