The suspect who killed two sisters in an accident faces 30 years to life in prison

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — The Yang family has not left their front yard, just steps from where their daughters took their last breaths, since Wednesday evening. A high-speed chase ended in the bedroom of 18-year-old Eliza Yang and 25-year-old Mang Yang, killing both.

“Dad and mom are waiting for their daughters to come back and that’s not going to happen,” said neighbor Tanya Loveless.

A known gang member, 18-year-old Adam Canales, is charged with four crimes, including two counts of murder.

He also faces felony charges of evading and killing a police officer and leaving the scene of an accident. He remains in jail on bail of more than $300,000.

“I ran over there. I wonder: what’s going on? What’s up? And I see the father coming out of the bedroom screaming,” says neighbor Silvia Blanco.

Days after the fatal accident, the sisters’ father is still wearing the same clothes as that night.

“He fell to the ground and rolled in the dirt. He cried,” Blanco says.

Action News is now learning that Canales ran down the street and went into a neighbor’s garage.

“He had all the blood on the side of his face. He tells her, ‘Help me, help me,’ and she says, ‘You just caused this accident,’ and he just kept running,” Blanco says.

This is not his first run-in with the law.

“He’s on juvenile probation; he has multiple prior convictions for carrying firearms,” said Fresno County Sheriff John Zanoni.

Sheriff Zanoni says Canales’ criminal history, particularly while he was a minor, will play a minor role in court.

But the sheriff said Friday a good Samaritan discovered a gun along the pursuit route. Investigators are currently conducting tests to determine whether it belongs to him. If so, that would be an additional charge to his already extensive fee list.

“We strongly believe this was a weapon thrown by Adam Canales while being pursued by our deputies,” said Sheriff Zanoni.

Neighbors, service providers and sheriff’s deputies stopped by Friday to offer their condolences to the Yang family. A young girl was given a teddy bear as a gift but chose to leave it next to the monument.

After the accident, the family was stranded for hours but eventually got a hotel with their insurance.

Many were frustrated by the timeliness and lack of assistance officers provided the family, especially given that the tragedy began with a police chase.

Ultimately, neighbors had to call the Red Cross to help the family and begin the process to get help.

“They need help, they need food, clothing. They need blankets because there’s no one out there to help them,” Blanco said.

The sisters were two of six children, the youngest was only nine years old. Neighbors say the family moved in just a few months ago.

“This house was like a slum house for years. It was just remodeled a few months ago. It was beautiful and then this tragedy happened,” says Tanya Loveless.

The community has reached out to the family and has already raised more than $35,000. Some, like Loveless, open their own homes to the family.

“This community is praying for them. This community is here for them, and whatever they need, whatever we need to do, we will do it,” Loveless said.

The family has set up a GoFundMe account to cover funeral costs and help repair the home.
