“There appears to be evidence that a hotel employee obtained the drugs for Payne,” the source explained. “A drug distribution charge could follow shortly.”

In a public statement translated from Spanish, according to the aforementioned source, the prosecutor said that he was keeping all avenues of investigation open, including a felony, and in particular was looking into who allegedly supplied Payne with the drugs in the hours before his death. According to reports, the investigation also aims to determine the possible involvement of third parties in the Teardrops singer’s death.

People previously reported, citing multiple sources, that Payne was asked to leave another hotel, the Palacio Duhau – Park Hyatt Buenos Aires, after he allegedly appeared drunk and harassed other guests. The hotel did not comment when asked to respond to the allegations reported in the publication.

Pablo Polococchio, the communications director for Buenos Aires’ security ministry, previously told People that the musician “jumped from the balcony” of his hotel room. A preliminary autopsy report found that Payne died from multiple injuries and “internal and external” bleeding consistent with a fall from a certain height. According to various media reports, Payne fell at least 12 meters to his death from the balcony of his room on the third floor of the hotel.

The singer’s “head injuries were sufficient to cause death,” while “internal and external bleeding” to the skull, chest, abdomen and limbs contributed to the mechanism of his death, coroners reportedly told People.

Authorities noted that “no defensive breaches were identified” and that no breaches suggested third-party involvement. The prosecutor handling Payne’s case also noted that a toxicology report is still pending.

After his death, law enforcement searched his room and reportedly recovered prescription drugs, energy supplements and other over-the-counter medications scattered there. A whiskey bottle, a lighter and a mobile phone were later recovered in the hotel courtyard next to Payne’s body.

The singer is survived by his seven-year-old son Bear, whom he shared with his ex-girlfriend Cheryl Cole, and his parents.
