“The Walking Dead” kicked off at Comic-Con with big reunions, big trailers and big teasers

Before anyone else says it, let’s state the obvious: Unlike the zombies at the core, The walking deadThe universe is alive and healthy. In 2024 a spin-off of Rick and Michonne was already seen on television during the second season of TWD: Daryl Dixon is currently airing on AMC. In the meantime, The focus is on Maggie and Negan Dead city is preparing for its second run next year. This cash cow is going nowhere.

In fact, AMC announced this today at New York Comic-Con Dead city returns in spring 2025 and released a new teaser featuring series stars Lauren Cohan, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and the barbed wire baseball bat that Morgan constantly runs around with. The footage makes Manhattan seem sufficiently post-apocalyptic, even as the city’s lights seem to mysteriously come back on.

The spin-off teams up adversaries Maggie Rhee (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) as they head to the city that never sleeps to find their kidnapped son. Of course they are forced to put differences aside, but can she really forgive him for smashing her husband’s head so hard that his eye popped out when he died? (Sorry, personally I’m still not over it).

Dead cityBoth actors were featured on the NYCC panel, along with their co-stars Dascha Polanco, Zeljko Ivanek, and Gaius Charles and Scott M. Gimple, chief content officer of the Walking Dead universe. Morgan and Cohan both reflected on what it’s been like playing their character over the last few years, with Morgan noting how much Negan has changed: “There’s something to be said for anyone still alive in the apocalypse . The fact that we, including Negan, survived this long is what he figured out. Over the years it has meant many different things. He used to be all about direct leadership and fear, but he’s changed. I admire his ability to adapt and read a space. Negan was a chess player. This year he may not be able to do that as often. I like that he has a soft spot for the younger generation and wants them to survive.”

Cohan, meanwhile, reflected on the central question surrounding her character, namely why she didn’t kill Morgans: “We saw Maggie simultaneously killing humans and hordes of zombies and raising her son. What I like about this season is that it’s spent a long time wearing blinders to get through crazy situations, and yet it hasn’t killed a single person who caused so much trouble. In many ways, the best is yet to come, to find inner strength, to constantly face a nemesis, and to understand why not take the easy way out. She’s making a lot of mistakes this season.”

Oh, and yes, Morgan actually heard your complaints about Negan killing Glenn: “By the way, everyone who died in this series is doing great in real life. Some of them have won major awards and been nominated for an Oscar,” he noted wryly.

The other one TWD-Country panel was for Daryl Dixonwhich is currently airing a surprisingly entertaining second season. The new episodes are all about that The inevitable reunion of Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride) in France – yes, you read that right, they are in Normandy. And soon they’ll be on their way Spain in the third season, as announced during San Diego Comic-Con.

Daryl DixonNYCC panelists included Gimple, Reedus and McBride, who also included actor Louis Puech Scigliuzzi, EP’s David Zabel, Greg Nicotero and Dan Percival. There was a lot of talk about McBride joining the series, on which she also serves as an executive producer, but there was also a lot of excitement about getting to destroy things like the Louvre. Per Zabel: “It was on our wish list. The planning took a year. The story of the villain Genet arose from the question of how we can use the Louvre before and after the apocalypse.”

As for the big reunion, which fans will have to wait a while to see, Reedus was convinced of its impact:

“We did it right when it happens when the only person in the world he needs is right there, as cheesy as that sounds. The thing about their relationship when we first started TWDit was about Rick and his journey. These two characters were always looking out for each other in the background and then it just got bigger and bigger. They have always connected. They have a history of abuse and support each other. So to see them reunite this season is well deserved. The bond is so strong you can feel it.”

Looking ahead, the cast and crew mostly kept a low profile, although Gimple teased: “We have something completely different cooking in another part of the world. “Something relatively imminent is coming.” The Walking Dead: Daryl DixonThe book Carol will air its finale on November 3rd and production on the third season is already underway.
