PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Two men have been charged in the fatal shooting of a U.S. Postal Service employee in Ohio in March.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio said in a news release Thursday that Kaprise Sledge and Thomas Sledge were charged with one count of murder of a public servant and employee of the United States and one count of discharge of a firearm during murder Violent crimes linked to the death of Jonte Davis.

According to an indictment, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said the two men shot the mailman while he was working on March 2. CBS affiliate WOIO reported that Davis was shot on Olive Avenue NE in Warren just before 2 p.m. Davis, 33, was reportedly taken to a local hospital after the shooting but later died there.

The two men pleaded not guilty in court Friday, WOIO reported. According to the television station, the trial is scheduled to begin on December 9th.

If convicted, the two men face life in prison for first-degree murder. They also face at least 10 years in prison for discharging a firearm as part of a violent crime charge.

Davis was remembered by his loved ones as “one of the nicest porters” and a “good man.”

A relationship between the victim and the two suspects or a motive were initially not known.
