Local nonprofit handles voter registration issues ahead of general election

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Monday is the deadline to register for this year’s presidential election.

Stand Up Mobile, a local nonprofit, is increasing its efforts to ensure everyone is ready to vote. Co-founder Beverly Cooper emphasizes the importance of using your voice as your voice.

“We need to be part of the decisions that are made and the only way we can do that is by making sure we are in the room when decisions are made.” Voting is the first step in ensuring that opportunity exists for us,” Cooper said.

Over the past month, Stand Up Mobile has been scouting neighborhoods and going door-to-door to remind people about the upcoming election.

“They’re surprised that someone thinks they’re important enough to knock on their door and remind them that they need to make sure they’re ready to vote, and they’re really happy that we’re there and appreciate it, to get the information.” “Cooper shares.

Cooper says they noticed some issues during the process.

“People don’t have IDs, so that was a big problem,” Cooper explains.

Cooper often finds that voter IDs have expired or that the addresses do not match their current residence. She also emphasizes the importance of regularly checking registration and polling locations. Many people have found that their registration is inactive or their polling place is closed.

She says Standup Mobile is also working hard to make sure college students who aren’t from the area know they can vote by mail and where to get a mail-in ballot.
