BROOKLYN – STATE SENATOR IWEN CHU INTRODUCED A BILL IN OCTOBER. 17 FOR PROTECTING FOOD Protect delivery workers from physical attacks while on the job. The proposed bill (S9924A) would classify attacks on delivery workers as a Class E felony and strengthen protections for these essential workers. The bill, currently in committee, also defines a food delivery person as a person employed in or engaged by a restaurant, a food retail outlet licensed by the Department of Agriculture and Markets, or a third-party service provider who, based on an order from a customer Delivers food or other goods. The move comes amid increasing violence against delivery staff. According to the Journal of Urban Health, more than 20% of New York City’s 61,000 food delivery workers have reported being victims of assault. A recent high-profile incident occurred in June when a delivery worker in Bensonhurst was attacked during a delivery.

Food delivery workers are a lifeline for New Yorkers, and they should not fear for their safety while serving our communities,” said Senator Chu.
